2009 Can Am Results and HOF Weekend Recap

The 2009 Hall of Fame Can Am Weekend was a huge success off and on the rink. Inducted into the IDTA/ASHI Street Hockey Hall of Fame were four former Leominster Ram players, Chris Housser # 9, Dave Guitar # 7, Ray Richard # 10, Mark Holman # 6 and Dan Broderick #5 of the Greater Boston Seahawks.  All 5 players had famed careers in the Sport of Dek, Street & Ball Hockey. The players were honored at center rink before the Semi Finals with personal banners. All the ceremomies and finals were shot by local access cable LATV.

The weekend was also full of many on rink surprises as the Rams unbeaten streak of 38 games came to an end at the hands of Peter Walters' Gr Boston Stars,  3 to 2 in Round Robin.  The Rams playoff hopes still alive played the Twin City Cyclones in the Qtr Finals beating them 5 to 1, then in the Semi's defeated rival Leominster Jets 7 to 3. The Stars won their division &  had an exciting game against Team Elite in the Qtr Finals  edging them in OT 4 to 3. Team Elite came back from a 3 to 0 Stars lead to force the Overtime. Stars  then played their local rival the Gr Boston Canucks in the Semi's Finals. The Canucks coached by Hall of Famer Dan Broderick had upset Chris Morrison's team from Toronto 3 to 2 in Overtime. The Canucks then lost  their Semi final, 5 to 2 to the Stars.

The Final Game was a classic as the Stars scored early, on a shot by Mike Travassos, Dave Purcell & Jay Cuomo assisting. Before the period was out Mark Richardson converted a pass from Kevin McNulty to give the Stars a solid 2 to 0 lead. The Rams outshot the Stars 14 to 7 in the 1st period. The Stars dominated the second period & goalie Tony Coridio (MVG)  was unbeatable, until Rams Conan Langlois broke the ice with a nifty pass to Tim Richard at 1:09 mark,  30 seconds later Bobby Housser (MVP) tied the game, Dan Richard & Jeremy Goguen assisting. Both teams finished with 9 shots, but the momentum had shifted. At 9:02 of the 3rd, Housser struck again with an end to end rush to put his team up 3-2. The Stars were on the powerplay when Rams  Steve Kendall (MVD) scored a shorthanded highlight goal  to seal the Championship. The Stars Travassos added a late goal to make it 4 to 3. The Rams coached by John Stamas outshot the the Stars 30 to 24 in the game. Rams Bobby Housser was Tournament Leading Scorer, 9 goals and 6 Assists,  followed by teammate Steve Kendall  4 goals & 10 assists. The Hall of Fame Story and player will follow this week.
